MKS Makes Unix Migration An Easy Task

Computer Reseller News Product Review

With the introduction of PC-based operating systems in the mid-1980s, Unix developers needed a way to port Unix utilities and emulated shells into DOS, and later, Microsoft Windows environments. The MKS Toolkit was developed to handle that task, and the utility has been invaluable ever since, giving developers the ability to run powerful Unix tools in any native Windows environment.

Simple Database Manipulation Using MKS Toolkit

Ever need to easily keep track of many pieces of data? It's not uncommon. Will a dedicated database application do the job for you? Sure. Do you need that much power? Probably not. Many simple database tasks can be handled easily with just the tools provided in MKS Toolkit. In fact, since MKS Toolkit includes programming languages like awk and perl, you can actually create and access quite complex databases. However, we’re not going to be using either awk or perl in creating our simple database. Can it be done with this restriction? Of course... find out how...

MKS Toolkit Quick Tips

Q: I receive a Windows Security Alert when running rsh.exe or rexec.exe. Is it safe to unblock these programs?
A: The MKS Toolkit rsh and rexec clients bind to the stderr port (1021) when setting up connections. This causes a Windows Security Alert to open on your desktop.

However, these are trustworthy applications and can safely be unblocked. Once you have done so, you will no longer receive security alerts for these applications.

Q: Does MKS Toolkit have an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN)?
A: Yes, an ECCN is an alpha-numeric classification used in the Commerce Control List to identify items for export control purposes and is assigned by the US Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security. The MKS Toolkit product family has ECCN 5D002 and for more information please contact tk_info@mkssoftware.com.
