Why does Windows x64 Edition appear to hang upon reboot after installing a patch for MKS Toolkit?

There is a networking problem in build 1218 of the Windows x64 Edition operating systems that involves the RSHD and REXECD services. This problem causes the system to appear to hang upon reboot after installing MKS Toolkit 8.7 Patch 2 and earlier. There are two workarounds for this problem:

  • Boot the machine in safe mode and then use the MKS Toolkit Control Panel applet to disable the RSHD and REXECD services. Once these services have been disabled the machine will boot successfully in normal mode.

  • From a second machine, use the MKS Toolkit service command to stop the RSHD and REXECD services. Once these services have been stopped the machine will continue to boot. You can then use the Control Panel to disable these services.
This issue only involves build 1218 of the Windows x64 Edition operating systems. Newer versions of these operating systems, such as build 1247, do not have this problem. In addition, once you install MKS Toolkit 8.7 Patch 3, a machine running build 1218 of these operating systems will no longer have this problem.
