UNIX to Windows Porting Case Study
With an increasing demand for PC-based, multi-platform products, enterprises around the world are looking for solutions that can bridge UNIX and Windows, so they can offer more than a single-platform product and remain competitive. When faced with the decision to duplicate existing UNIX/Linux applications on Windows and take advantage of the new Web development model, the options are clear: either perform a complete rewrite, or find a tool that lets you port the application.

Rewriting old applications can take anywhere from months to years and requires ongoing maintenance of two separate source code bases, which is a major ongoing cost. The second option--porting--should be carefully considered because the price for selecting the wrong tool can be high.

Security 2014 - BowBridge Software
"BowBridge Software Ltd. selects PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise over Microsoft Subsystems and Cygwin to port robust, missioncritical security solutions to Windows®."

ABAS Software AG
"PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers met our expectations fully. Our ported NT application demonstrates the same, full-scale performance as our UNIX installations."
ABB Power T&D Company
"The initial port [using PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers] took only about 6 weeks... which is comparable to the time it takes us to do a port to another UNIX platform."
ADP
After looking at several solutions, ADP selected PTC MKS Toolkit for Developers to port their UNIX-based application. This solution enabled them to use PTC MKS Toolkit for Developers as a tool to support their existing development environment of C, C++ and a Cobol Compiler. During their tests, they found there was very little customizing effort and it was very easy to use. All for One Systemhaus AG
In searching for a solution to broaden the market appeal of DCPA into the world of Windows, All for One learned about PTC MKS Toolkit for Developers and quickly realized the Kornshell function would provide the ideal solution for rebuilding their existing UNIX login for Windows environments. This would then allow for them to bring DCPA onto the Windows platform with ease, while providing a familiar look and feel to its users. Cobe BCT
With PTC MKS Toolkit for Developers, Cobe BCT can integrate the two platforms by using a legacy UNIX application on the Windows platform without immense amounts of incurred cost. Now instead of jumping between environments, or rewriting applications that have stood the test of time, Cobe's R&D team can concentrate on new product development. CogniSeis
"We would never have even attempted this project without PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers. It would have cost too much and might have taken years. With PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers, we just ported it over to Windows NT, got it to compile, and brought up Windows NT. It was very simple - and very fast."
Council of State Governments
PTC MKS Toolkit for Developers' capability "was a godsend" in helping the Council tie headquarters into satellite offices, allowing information and email movement in and out of the headquarters and to the rest of the world via the Internet. CSM3D
"Shoemaster is an application that represents 30 years of development. We ported it to Windows in about 90 days, without any loss of performance or quality. With PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers, we found a reliable tool that really lives up to its reputation." ELSENET
One of the greatest challenges developers face today is supporting their applications across different platforms. The growth of Windows and the continued demand for UNIX in today's global organizations has created a need for robust and reliable administrative solutions. To be efficient and perform well, a mixed computing environment demands a consistent set of commands and utilities.
Getronics Olivetti Japan, Ltd
When Getronics Olivetti Japan decided to offer new Microsoft® Windows® Server-based products in addition to its UNIX-based systems, Microsoft Certified Solution Provider PTC provided a fast migration path to success. Its development platform, PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers, allowed Getronics Olivetti Japan to market enhanced products that are gaining the company a competitive edge - in less than half the expected development time. IMA
"IMA's EDGE - The CRM Call Center Solution for MKS Users
EDGE® is a complete CRM development and systems integration environment that is tailor-made for forward-looking organizations that view customer interaction as strategic and see their call centers as profit centers that increase customer loyalty and revenues."
Lehman Brothers
In the past, Lehman Brothers had supported the GDSS trading platform across a number of Sun workstations running UNIX. The cost of maintaining GDSS on Sun workstations, however, was high and the development staff needed more power and flexibility in order to take advantage of new Web development models. Their options were clear: they could rewrite the entire 8-year-old application natively to the Microsoft Windows API (WIN32) and attempt to add functionality to a system that was virtually obsolete. Or they could port the application from UNIX to Microsoft Windows using PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers from PTC. Lehman Brothers soon concluded that the latter route would be the fastest and most economical way to migrate its software from UNIX to Windows and quickly leave their Sun workstations behind. Logica
Software integrator and systems house Logica has a solid reputation for working closely with the water industry. Its MC2000 telemetry solution, now available on Windows thanks to PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers, enables water utilities - and gas companies, too - to collect monitoring and measurement data from remote sites around broad-spread catchment areas in real-time.

Raytheon Missile Systems
"… There is a remarkable performance improvement using Mentor Graphics tools with PTC X/Server (previously XVision) as compared to X-Win32. Not sure what you're doing, but it's working." Sculptured Software

Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG
Siemens Nixdorf did not make its decision to ship MKS Toolkit for Developers with Scenic-Celsius lightly. PTC MKS Toolkit, like all of the software products pre-installed on the platform, had to first undergo six months of rigorous testing and competitive analysis. During this period, MKS Toolkit was put through a strict set of checks and balances looking at its existing functionality and stability. In every aspect of testing, PTC MKS Toolkit performed with flying colors. Star Enterprise
